Cosmetics Starting Point

Loupe Factory starts cosmetics businesses with starter catalogs and workflow labels for beauty products, packaging, external production milestones, operational inventory, kits, samples, fulfillment, and finance handoffs. The starter catalog covers skincare, body care, hair and scalp care, color cosmetics, nail care, fragrance, beauty tools, refills, gift sets, and home fragrance.

This starting point is especially useful for beauty brands that coordinate contract manufacturers while their own product, procurement, operations, warehouse, sales, and finance teams need one shared view of progress and stock.

Operational scope

These defaults help your team organize milestones, inventory, and catalog labels. They do not determine product classification, permitted claims, market authorization, or batch-release status. They also do not replace controlled formula records, quality systems, regulatory submissions, safety assessments, or a manufacturer's official batch records. Keep required decisions and records in the systems and processes used by the responsible qualified teams.

Starter Snapshot

Setting Cosmetics starting point
Price basis Per piece
Default weight unit Gram (g)
Product emphasis Beauty products, tools, samples, refills, kits, gifting, and home fragrance
Material emphasis Formula inputs, primary and secondary packaging, labels, lab and production supplies, and fulfillment materials
Workflow emphasis Product planning, approvals, contract-manufacturer coordination, receiving, stock readiness, kits, samples, and post-sale holds

Admins can change these values and catalogs after setup.

Common abbreviations in the starter labels include CMO for contract manufacturing organization, MOQ for minimum order quantity, PO for purchase order, CoA for certificate of analysis, RTV for return to vendor, 3PL for third-party logistics, QA for quality assurance, QC for quality control, and WIP for work in progress. Other labels use R&D for research and development, SPF for sun protection factor, PPE for personal protective equipment, and PR for public relations.

This diagram is a simplified orientation for internal coordination. Your real sequence may differ, especially when a contract manufacturer owns the manufacturing and quality records outside Loupe Factory.

If you outsource manufacturing, start with handoff, manufacturer readiness, document review, brand receipt, and stock-status milestones. Keep compounding, filling, and in-process quality stages only when your team needs to track those supplier activities.

Warning

Labels such as QC Passed, Finished, and the various hold states record your team's operational status. They do not provide a regulatory, safety, or compliance determination by themselves.

Default Item Attributes

Every cosmetics inventory item starts with these item attribute keys as empty rows, so batch and shelf-life details are captured at intake rather than reconstructed during a recall or an audit. Teams can fill in what applies and add any other key they need.

Default attribute key User-friendly definition
Batch No The manufacturing batch, lot, or control number printed on the unit, such as B23A104.
Mfg Date The manufacturing or production date. Use YYYY-MM-DD when the full date is known. Otherwise, keep the source document's precision, such as 2026-03.
Expiry Date The expiry, best-before, or use-by date, such as 2027-11-30. Use YYYY-MM-DD when the full date is known. Otherwise, keep the source document's precision. A period-after-opening mark such as 12M is not an expiry date.
Net Content The fill quantity of one unit with its unit of measure, such as 50 ml, 30 g, or 1.7 fl oz.
Ingredients The ingredient or INCI list as written in the source document, separated by commas, such as Aqua, Glycerin, Niacinamide. Record only the listed ingredients, not marketing claims.
Skin Type The skin type or concern the product is intended for, such as Dry, Oily, Combination, or Sensitive.

To compare these values across several items, use Show attributes in an inventory table. Search also finds values such as B23A104 or Sensitive while the columns are closed.

Note

Shade is not an attribute here. It is recorded as the item's Color, so shade stays searchable and filterable across the inventory table.

Default Cost Components

Cosmetics businesses start with these cost component types, so a unit cost separates formula, packaging, testing, and outside manufacturing instead of arriving as one number from a contract manufacturer's invoice.

Cost component What it covers
Base vehicle Water, oil, alcohol, or prepared base that carries the formula and sets its format.
Active ingredient Functional ingredient used for a defined benefit, such as brightening, soothing, or conditioning.
UV filter Approved ultraviolet filter or sunscreen booster in a sun-care formula.
Surfactant Cleansing, foaming, wetting, or dispersing ingredient used in face, body, or hair formulas.
Emulsifier Ingredient that combines oil and water phases or dissolves otherwise incompatible inputs.
Emollient Oil, ester, butter, or wax that improves slip, softness, and skin feel.
Humectant Moisture-binding ingredient used to support hydration and product feel.
Rheology modifier Thickener, gellant, or viscosity-control ingredient that sets texture and suspension.
Preservative Preservative, antioxidant, or stabilizer that protects quality through the intended shelf life.
Botanical Plant extract, botanical oil, hydrosol, or other nature-derived ingredient.
Fragrance or flavor Fragrance, flavor, essential-oil blend, or sensory modifier added to the formula.
Color or pigment Colorant, mineral pigment, dye, pearl, or shimmer that creates the intended shade.
Propellant Pressurized dispensing input used with an aerosol pack, tracked apart from the bulk.
Applicator Pack input that applies or dispenses product, such as a wand, roller ball, brush, dropper, or pump.
Beauty tool or reusable accessory Reusable facial or body tool, massage device, or other durable accessory, separate from pack applicators and gifts.
Promotional or gifting item Gift, branded merchandise, presentation accessory, or insert allocated to a kit, campaign, or product.
